Manglik dosha, also called mangal dosh or kuja dosha, forms when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a kundali, usually counted from the lagna and often also from the Moon and Venus. It is common, it is frequently cancelled by other factors in the chart, and when two charts are matched sensibly it rarely needs to be a cause for fear.
Quick answer
- What it is: Mars in one of six sensitive houses, said to bring heat, impatience or friction into married life.
- How common: six of the twelve houses count, so by lagna alone roughly half of all charts could be called manglik before any cancellation is applied.
- Cancellation: Mars in its own or exaltation sign, Jupiter's aspect, certain sign-house pairs and both partners being manglik are widely accepted exceptions.
- Remedies: Hanuman worship, Mangal mantra, Tuesday daan and calm habits, with gemstones only after a chart check.
What is manglik dosha?
Mars is the planet of energy, courage, drive and competition. These are excellent qualities at work or on the sports field, but in the houses that govern home, family, intimacy and the spouse, an unbalanced Mars can show up as quick temper, a need for control or frequent arguments.
Classical texts list the manglik houses because each touches married life in some way:
- 1st house: the self and temperament; Mars here aspects the 7th directly.
- 2nd house: family and speech; counted mainly in South Indian practice.
- 4th house: home, peace of mind and domestic comfort.
- 7th house: the spouse and the marriage itself.
- 8th house: longevity of the marriage, in-laws and intimacy.
- 12th house: the bed, expenses and private life.
Full, mild and cancelled manglik
Astrologers rarely give a simple yes or no. A chart where Mars is manglik from the lagna, the Moon and Venus, in a sign where it is uncomfortable and with no Jupiter support, is treated as a full manglik. Mars manglik from only one reference point, or in a friendly sign, is usually called mild or anshik. Where a cancellation rule applies cleanly, many astrologers say the chart is effectively not manglik for matching.
The houses also differ in weight. Mars in the 7th or 8th is generally read as more significant for married life than Mars in the 2nd or 12th, and North Indian practice often leaves out the 2nd altogether. This is why two "manglik" charts can carry very different meaning.
Because the dosha concerns married life, it is checked mainly during kundali matching. It says nothing about a person's character, worth or luck in general.
How to check mangal dosh in your kundali
- Get an accurate chart. Make a free kundali with your exact birth time and place.
- Find Mars from the lagna. Count the house Mars occupies from the ascendant. If it is 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12, note it.
- Check from the Moon and Venus. Many astrologers repeat the count from the Moon sign (Chandra lagna) and from Venus. Mars manglik from two or three of these points is considered stronger.
- Apply cancellation rules. This step decides whether the dosha is full, mild (anshik) or effectively cancelled.
- Compare with the partner's chart. The final judgement is always made in the context of the match.
Online calculators often mark a chart "manglik" without applying cancellations. Treat that label as the start of the check, not the final answer.
Cancellation rules for manglik dosha
Different schools list slightly different exceptions, so astrologers apply them with judgement. The rules most widely cited are:
Cancellation by Mars's own strength
- Mars in its own signs, Aries or Scorpio, or in its exaltation sign, Capricorn.
- Mars in Leo or Aquarius in the 1st house, Gemini or Virgo in the 2nd, Aries or Scorpio in the 4th, Cancer or Capricorn in the 7th, Sagittarius or Pisces in the 8th, and Taurus or Libra in the 12th are traditionally listed as reduced or cancelled positions.
Cancellation by other planets
- Jupiter aspecting Mars or the house it occupies, or Jupiter or Venus placed in the 1st or 7th house.
- Mars conjunct Jupiter or the Moon (the Chandra-Mangal combination is often seen as softening).
- A strong, well-placed 7th lord in a kendra or trikona.
Cancellation through the partner's chart
- Both partners manglik to a similar degree, called samya or balance.
- Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the same sensitive houses in the partner's chart, which many astrologers treat as a balancing factor.
Common myths about mangal dosh
Few topics in Indian astrology carry as much fear as this one, and much of it comes from half-understood rules. A few points worth clearing up:
- "A manglik's spouse will face danger." No responsible astrologer reads a single placement this way. Health and longevity are judged from many factors across both charts.
- "Manglik means no happy marriage." Plenty of manglik people have warm, lasting marriages. Mars brings energy and protectiveness as well as heat.
- "It disappears at 28." Mars is said to mature around that age, which often makes life calmer, but the placement remains part of the chart.
- "A manglik must marry only a manglik." Matching two mangliks is one balancing option, not the only one. A cancelled or mild dosha can match well with a non-manglik chart.
- "Only girls need to worry." Mars works the same way in every chart. Singling out daughters is a social habit, not an astrological rule.
Nobody should be pressured, shamed or charged large sums because of a manglik label. If a reading makes you feel frightened rather than informed, it is fine to seek a second opinion.
Manglik matching: two charts together
Manglik matching is part of the wider ashtakoot process. Our guide to the 36 gunas in kundali matching explains the score; here is how Mars fits in:
- Both manglik: usually considered balanced, and the match is judged on the remaining factors.
- One manglik, cancelled: generally no concern.
- One manglik, uncancelled: the astrologer looks for balancing malefics in the other chart, the strength of each 7th house, and the dashas running around the time of marriage.
What else is weighed alongside Mars
Even when the manglik check is clear, a sensible match still considers the guna score, Nadi and Bhakoot, the strength of each 7th lord and the Navamsa. A balanced manglik match with poor compatibility elsewhere is not automatically good, and a mild one-sided manglik with strong compatibility elsewhere is not automatically bad.
Timing matters too. If a Mars dasha or a sensitive Mars transit is running around the proposed wedding date, an astrologer may suggest choosing the marriage muhurat with extra care, avoiding Tuesdays and Mars-ruled nakshatras where possible.
Families sometimes reject good proposals over a manglik flag alone. Before doing that, it is worth having both charts read side by side. You can also find an astrologer suited to your question and ask specifically about Mars in both charts.
Simple remedies for manglik dosha
Remedies aim to channel Mars's energy, not to fight it. The aim is a calmer temperament and a steady mind.
Devotional remedies
- Recite the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays, or daily if you can.
- Chant the Mangal beej mantra, "Om Kram Kreem Kroum Sah Bhaumaya Namah", 108 times on Tuesdays. A rudraksha japa mala is a simple way to keep count.
- Read the Mangal Chandika Stotra, or worship Lord Kartikeya, who is linked with Mars.
Daan and fasting
- On Tuesdays, give red lentils (masoor dal), jaggery or red cloth to those in need.
- Keep a light Tuesday fast if your health allows.
- Donate blood when you are eligible; it is a modern, meaningful way to honour Mars.
Keep the remedy steady rather than elaborate. Chanting for a few minutes every Tuesday for months does more for the mind than a single large ritual, and it costs nothing.
Everyday habits
- Regular exercise, sport or physical work gives Mars a healthy outlet.
- Pause before reacting in arguments; speak once the heat has passed.
- Respect brothers and younger siblings, whom Mars also represents.
Red coral is sometimes suggested for Mars, but it can increase heat in the wrong chart. Consider it only after a careful check by an astrologer, and never as a promised fix.
None of these remedies is a condition for marriage. They are ways to work with Mars's energy, and they are just as useful for a manglik person who is already happily married.
When to speak to an astrologer
If your chart shows Mars in a sensitive house, or a proposal has been held up because of manglik dosha, a short consultation can clear up a lot. Ask whether the dosha is full, mild or cancelled, how it compares with the other chart, and which simple remedy suits you. Marriage-focused astrologers handle these questions every day.
